Britain is notorious for having a dismissive attitude
toward learning foreign languages. What it rarely addressed is the damage
that this skill shortage is doing to British business and the economy.
Recent studies have shown that many businesses in Great
Britain and beyond know they are losing business through difficulties
with international communication, but there has been no definitive assessment
of what these losses have actually cost British business. As a result,
few companies, particularly SME’s,
have created plans to communicate effectively with international trading
partners who don’t speak their language.
A new study, with funding from the European
Commission, aims to focus attention on the economic value of foreign
language skills. It will survey business performance in relation to use
of language skills across a number of European countries. The report will
make recommend policies to develop language skills to support trade development
and workforce mobility across Europe. It will also advise governments
and businesses on the best use of language skills to stimulate economic
growth and jobs.
In the UK, there are two courses open to businesses who
wish to have a more linguistically aware workforce: train the existing
staff or hire less monoglots. The foreign language situation in Britain
does not have any solution on the horizon as modern languages are given
less and less time in schools. One option is to send employees for language
courses. Here are a selection of available courses:
Leeds is a booming business city in the north
of England. There are a large number of schools and private tutors
available to businesses in and around the city and in neighbouring
Bradford.
Bristol
is a famously creative city in the west of England. The multicultural
make-up of the city is reflected in the fact that there is a large
industry in private language tuition in Bristol.
The city on the Mersey was once one of the world's
busiest shipping cities as ships sailing to and from America would
refuel and reload in Liverpool's famous docks. There is are a
number of Spanish courses available.
Cambridge is famous for one of the world's greatest
universities.
The academic nature of the town leaves it in a stronger linguistic
position than most in the UK, but demand for Spanish courses is
high.
