The aims of the day are:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To alert the general public to the importance of language learning<br \/>\nTo promote linguistic and cultural diversity and increase intercultural understanding<br \/>\nTo encourage lifelong learning<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nOqEI-dQ9zo \">Watch<\/a> Pedro Chavez from the European Commission talking about the day.<\/p>\n<p>I recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.language-museum.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/28\/cogito-ergo-sum\/ \">posted<\/a> about the proposed idea to adopt Latin as the official language of the European Union, but as I concluded then, the EU is committed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askoxford.com\/languages\/culturevulture\/general\/speak\/\">multilingualism<\/a>, so it\u2019s unlikely to happen. Europe is incredibly diverse, with around 225 indigenous languages as well as non-European languages such as Arabic, Hindi and Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>So, get involved and become one of the many Europeans who are multilingual! Try <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/education\/languages\/news\/docs\/edl09_en.pdf \">here<\/a> to find out what activities are happening near you \u2013 there are events all over Europe.
