We\u2019ve already seen that the Word of the Year 2009 is either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.language-museum.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/20\/to-unfriend-or-defriend\/\">unfriend<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.language-museum.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/03\/word-of-the-year-twitter\/\">Twitter<\/a> depending on who you choose to believe, but more amusing (for me) is the recent announcement of the First Annual Jelly Donut Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Never heard of them? Well, an American translation company has decided to award the donuts to the top 5 real translation and interpreting errors of the year. The name is in honour of John F. Kennedy&#8217;s pronouncement &#8220;Ich bin ein Berliner&#8221;, widely <a href=\"http:\/\/urbanlegends.about.com\/cs\/historical\/a\/jfk_berliner.htm\">mistranslated<\/a> as &#8220;I am a jelly donut&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>In first place, in a great example of being very careful about the words you choose, a high-level meeting between US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov became an international joke \u2013 all because of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/7930047.stm \">a button<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Look at the rest of the top 5 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/2009\/12\/prweb3367024.htm\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So as we near the end of the year, there are a lot of awards and \u2018top ten\u2019 lists everywhere.
