{"id":850,"date":"2010-08-18T20:30:25","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T20:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.language-museum.com\/blog\/?p=850"},"modified":"2010-08-18T20:30:25","modified_gmt":"2010-08-18T20:30:25","slug":"language-and-comedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.language-museum.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/18\/language-and-comedy\/","title":{"rendered":"Language and comedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listening to the radio in the car earlier, I heard about a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chortle.co.uk\/shows\/edinburgh_fringe_2010\/r\/18429\/rebecca_donohue%3A_bilingual_comedian \">Bilingual Comedian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The show is by Becky Donohue, and in it she apparently \u201cattempts to \u2018teach\u2019 the audience and herself Spanish using nothing but \u2018borrowed\u2019 language tapes\u201d. The show is based on the genius <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eddieizzard.com\/\">Eddie Izzard<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Bring Bilingual\u2019 (see video). <\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, I also read an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/culture\/2010\/aug\/17\/edinburgh-overseas-comics\">article<\/a> today about comics from overseas performing at the festival. The article explores the idea that comedy is different in different languages \u2013 for example a joke that works in Italian because it uses Italian wordplay would not have the same effect in English.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to laugh and joke in a different language seems to be quite difficult to achieve \u2013 not only do you need to know the language, you need to know the cultural background.
